Pre-GDC conference

"Hey, Sam, you got a minute?" Josh hung in Sam's doorway as Sam hurried around his office.

"Not really. I need to get to the conference."

"Sam, this is important."

"So is this conference, Josh! I need to go."

"Sam, you need to-"

"Sam! We're leaving!" called Ginger from outside his office. "I need to go."

"Sam, please, one second."

"Tell me later!"

"Sam, there's going to be-" Josh was cut off by Sam rushing past him.

"- a drop in," he finished quietly. He sighed and turned away to go to Leo's office.

*

"Josh! I need to speak to you!" Sam said angrily, storming into Josh's office. Josh looked up in mild surprise.

"Okay..."

"The drop-in! Did you know too? I'm assuming you did, because Toby, CJ, and Leo certainly did."

Sam didn't even need to wait for Josh's answer. All he needed to do was look at his face.

"You knew!" Sam yelled. "You knew and you never bothered to tell me!"

"Sam-"

"You should have told me, Josh. You should have told me because that's what best friends do."

"Sam, listen to me, please. Let me-"

"No, Josh! No! Don't." Sam turned and stormed out again.

Josh sat in thought for a moment. He finally stood up and followed Sam to his office.

Sam was sitting there, head in hands.

"Sam."

Sam looked up. "Josh! Do you not give up? Go away!" he yelled.

"Sam! I was going to tell you!"

"Sure, Josh. Too late for that, isn't it," he said with bitterness in his voice.

"No! Do you remember before the meeting, when I came to you?" He paused. "That's when I was going to tell you! You wouldn't give me a chance!" he yelled. He paused again to lower his voice. "You didn't even give me a chance."

Josh stood there a moment longer, than turned and left.

Sam could see it in Josh's eyes. Josh was hurt.

Sam felt a pang of guilt. His thoughts traveled back to before the conference.

Josh had been trying to tell him.

Why hadn't he figured it out before he went screaming at Josh?

He'd been too angry, that's why. Too angry.

And he just had to take it all out on Josh.

Sam pulled his Mercedes up in front of Josh's building. He checked the clock. 1:00 am. Josh would still be up, Sam just knew it.

He used the key Josh had given him two years ago, and let himself into the building. He strode up the three sets of stairs, and knocked on Josh's door. He heard shuffling, and then the door opened.

"You were the last person I expected to see standing there," Josh commented quietly.

"I know. Josh, I'm sorry."
